E2 have successfully completed the design and contract management of this full refurbishment and extension of a bomb damaged Victorian town house over a retail unit in Shoreditch.
The result delivers a shop, music studio and house above for our clients to live and work in.
The project includes a two storey modern extension to the rear with a west facing roof terrace and full renovation and improvements to the existing with new insulation and windows throughout. Interior design included a bespoke staircase and kitchen.
The new feature staircase to the living space performs several functions. Its central function is to provide access to the roof terrace, which is arrived at through an opening stand on rooflight.
The stair also includes joinery that creates new library storage space and uses the least amount of space possible in order that the room is not compromised. It is therefore suspended in order that space beneath can be made the most of.
The roof terrace features a large opening walk on rooflight, which provides ingenious access via the feature stair to the room below.
New porcelain tiles create a slick contemporary feel to the amenity space, and a new industrial anthracite metal mesh boundary treatment provides necessary privacy from the neighbour’s terrace, whilst allowing light to protrude through it.
The minimalist treatment to the bathroom creates a zen environment; rational utilitarian and ordered, whilst the his and her basins create a joyful and witty counterpoint.
